Lewis was born on February 22, 1922 in Bay Roberts, Newfoundland. Son to Joseph and Mary Snow (Dawe). Lewis had four older sisters who doted over him, Flora, Sevie, Winnie and Hilda.
Lewis was a graduate of Dalhousie University and Pine Hill Divinity Hall, Nova Scotia, where he graduated with Bachelors of Arts and a Bachelor of Divinity. He was ordained in 1952 by the Newfoundland Conference of the United Church of Canada.
Lewis was called to his first pastoral charge in Little Catalina, Newfoundland from 1952-1956. Lewis made the decision to leave Newfoundland and move to Port Lambton/ Sombra/ Becher for his next charge from 1956-1959. Tilbury United called Lewis to their charge from 1959–1964. Lewis then received a call to Central United Church in Welland, Ontario from 1964-1972. The First United Church in St. Thomas, Ontario was the next charge to reach out to have Lewis minister their congregation from 1972-1974. Lewis went on to minister at Charing Cross/ Wesley United Church from 1974-1983. His final charge was Dorchester/ Crumlin United Church in 1983 until he retired in 1988. Lewis went on to volunteer as a lay minister until 2015 for many different churches including Hyde Park United Church in London, South Sauble community church. Lewis was an integral part in the building of the South Sauble United Church in Sauble Beach. Although Lewis was retired, he always had time for his congregation, friends and his family for ministerial work such as weddings, baptisms, funerals and support for grieving families or those in need.
Lewis had many interests including woodworking projects, being an avid reader, curling and the Toronto Maple Leaf’s. Lewis loved being surrounded by his big family and having get togethers, especially during the holidays and up at his trailer in Sauble Beach.
Those who knew Lewis well, knew he had a great ‘Newfoundlander sense of humour’ and always had a quip to go along with a story.
He frequently greeted those close to him with “Hello, my love” or “Hello, my darling”. He will be greatly missed by all.
