Ann and Murray Keys posted a condolence

Our family’s friendship with the Staffen dates back 57 or so years. So many memories, not just of Harold, but of ‘the team’ … for we always thought and spoke of Harold and Jean as ‘one.’
Murray first met Harold, and shortly thereafter Graham and Brian, when they were hired as summer students at Silverwood Dairy. That association lasted throughout university, and when we married, moved back to London and started our family, we became frequent fixtures around the Staffen household, and came to know Doreen, Margaret and Keith.
Thinking back on it, with some embarrassment, we recall how often during those summers, we’d call up Harold and Jean on a summer afternoon and invite ourselves to Dorchester. The call would go something like this: “Hi Harold, Sarah (our daughter) would like to know if she might come for a swim?” (Sarah was all of a few months old!) Her brother Ben regularly floated in the Staffen’s pool long before he was born. Harold and Jean never once said “no”, or “it’s not convenient.”
Sundays were the best, for roast beef was always on the menu. Sarah, by then a toddler, delighted in standing on a chair at the kitchen counter while Jean instructed her in the finer points of making Yorkshire puddings while the rest of us swam, visited, and played bridge or Scrabble. In our mind’s eye is Harold, ensconced in his armchair, happily taking in all the mayhem around him.
Harold and Jean became like another set of grandparents to our children, and what wonderful role models they were - sharing great fun, kindness, hospitality and much love, in both happy times and in great sadness when faced with Keith’s long illness.
And always, their generosity! With 7 to feed in their own family, the good humour and grace with which they welcomed extra mouths to their table on a semi-regular basis, is humbling. (It was in fact often more than the four of us, for we weren’t the only strays Harold and Jean took in.)
We were blessed to call Harold, Jean, and the Staffen family, ‘our friends’. You’ve taught us much.
With gratitude, Ann, Murray, Sarah and Ben Keys

My condolences to the entire Staffen Family. Very hard to lose a parent, grandparent, at any age, yet Harold, having lived a long and good life, and having had such a great example of Fatherhood, this you can take solace in.

Harold was a very close friend of my Mom and Dad. (Gert and Cyril Bailey) for many, many years. Mom worked at Silverwood’s and also I did for four summers. We visited Harold and Jean many times in Dorchester and I have many fond memories of their home and children.
When my Dad was transferred to Montreal, it was heartbreaking since they went to an apartment where there were no dogs allowed.
God bless Harold and Jean they offered their wonderful home to Candy our dog. She is buried on their property. Which incidentally my daughter-in-law lived for a while as her parents purchased that wonderful home.
Our condolences to the family.

Harold was a wonderful great-grandfather who touched everyone's hearts deeply. He served his country, he fathered a big family, and he was beloved by all. We will always remember the delicious meals and pool parties hosted by Harold and Jean when they lived in Dorchester. Our heartfelt condolences to Brian, Doreen, Graham, and all the Staffen family. Harold and Jean live on in their children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren; their stake in the future is assured. May they both rest together in peace. Dana, Andrew, Harry, and Sasha

I remember Harold fondly as a supervisor in the ice cream dept when I worked the evening shift for a summer job during my high school years. His daughter Margaret also packed ice cream and we became friends meeting up summer after summer.
Margaret, if you remember me, please contact me...would be lovely to have a chat after all these years. Brenda (Welch) Mutter

What a beautiful veteran he was. You all are so blessed to have had such a wonderful father.
I remember Mr. Staffen (Respected my eldery's)well at Parkwood. Always so polite. We organized a "wish" for him as he wished for a nice dinner and flowers with his beautiful wife. We ensured it was all set up for his likings with music, beautiful view and a rose in the center of the table. : )
GOD BLESS YOU ALL
